Sometimes we do scavenger hunts on our hikes to make them more exciting for the kids. It helps when our son gets bored and doesn’t want to walk anymore. That hasn’t been much of an issue lately, but more so when he was 2-3 years old.

We’ll ask him to find a lizard, a flower, a caterpillar, a bird, and an acorn. The items will vary based on where we are. We just make a verbal list, but a friend prints a piece of paper with pictures of items for her son to find.

It also works in an airport – find a red suitcase, a magazine, someone using headphones, someone talking on a cell phone, etc. It makes a great layover pastime.

Where does your family like to do scavenger hunts?

scavenger hunts sound like fun, when my boys were small we used to do them all the time.
