Travel Activities for Kids

If you’re planning to travel with kids for the holidays, you’re probably wondering how to keep them entertained on a long drive or flight. I’ve put together a list of travel activities for kids that have helped us in the past, plus a few I’m saving for our next trip. Don’t worry if you’re not crafty, these don’t require any preparation or craftiness. They are all available on Amazon and they won’t take up much space in your luggage. These would also make great stocking stuffers or after-school activities.

Wikki Stix

Wikki Stix are wax-covered pieces of yarn that can be used to create shapes and objects. You can pack Wikki Stix alone for freestyle creations, or bring along companion products for practicing letters, numbers and counting, or shapes.

Masks and Hats

The Masks & Cuffs set kept my kids occupied for hours on a recent road trip. My son wore his mask everywhere we went for days. They were a big hit, and my husband commented on what a good purchase they were. I plan to purchase them again with this set for next time. There is also a girly set of masks if you prefer.

Design-Your-Own Bangles, Bracelets, and Headbands

My kids loved decorating the bracelets on a recent road trip, and they had something fun to wear afterward. This set also includes headbands and bangles, or you can purchase them separately. There are also rings and wristbands that look fun.

Water Wow!

No-Prep Travel Activities for Kids - A Wandering Vine

I’ve loved Melissa & Doug Water Wow for years. Just fill the little brush with water, and kids can “paint” the pages with no mess. The only potential for mess is if the child manages to twist open the brush and spill the water. Fortunately, it’s such a small amount of water that the mess will be minor. Once the page dries, it can be repainted. We also love these for restaurants. This set includes letters and numbers, but there are several options for younger children with pictures.

ColorBlast!

Melissa & Doug ColorBlast! are similar to Water Wow, but no water is necessary. The included marker contains the water to color the pages. Let the kids color without worrying about markers on the car or couch.

Mess-Free Glitter

I got a few Melissa & Doug Mess-Free Glitter kits from Target the other day, and my kids loved them. They’re not messy and would be perfect for traveling.

Tape Activity Book

I have the Melissa & Doug Tape Activity Book saved for our next trip. No mess and good hand-eye coordination practice.

Travel Buddies

The My Studio Girl Travel Buddies is for ages 8 and up, so I’m saving this idea for when my kids are a little older. It’s a fun activity to stitch the travel buddy, then they can tuck them in the little bed. It says for girls, but I would totally buy this for my son.
