Volunteering helps kids learn a sense of responsibility, community, and helpfulness. It’s a wonderful way to show them that their actions make a difference.

Our local community has monthly family-friendly park clean-up events, for everything from cleaning and picking up trash to spreading new mulch. If your community doesn’t have such events, or they don’t fit your schedule, you can always do something on your own. Just grab some gloves and a few trash bags to pickup trash on the beach or side of the road. Or put together care packages for the homeless.

You can also donate things to local charities. I’ve asked my son to pick out some toys he no longer wants to give to a child that doesn’t have many toys. We also like to buy gifts for the Angel Tree during Christmastime, and donate to Toys for Tots. I collect things throughout the year when I find a good deal.

What’s your favorite way to volunteer?

Hi, what a lovely theme you have for your A to Z, it brings back fond memories for me, I have done so many of these things with my kids over the years. Sadly all grown up now and not wanting to hang out with me so much.

I’m sure the time will come when they want to hang out with you again!

I have not been good at volunteering but I used to walk dogs on Saturdays at the local animal shelter. Does that count? I think it’s a great idea to get kids familiar with the idea of volunteering. Maybe they should teach it in school.

That counts! I agree about teaching it in school. I think my high school actually had a volunteer requirement for graduation.

I love your choice for V. Volunteering is so important. I have put in many hours volunteering at many different organizations and causes over the years.

I once volunteered at my local animal shelter and nursing home and I found out another benefit of volunteering besides the ones listed above is that its actual job experience.
