This is probably my favorite. We go hiking a lot as a family, and I’ve recently started taking the kids hiking on my own. I was intimidated, but now I wish I hadn’t waited so long.
I love being out in nature, and taking in the wonderful views. Sometimes we pack a picnic to enjoy. We’re fortunate to live in a place with beautiful scenery (both mountains and beaches within driving distance), and great weather. We love to travel, too, and usually include hiking on our vacations.
I recommend leaving all expectations behind, though. If you’re trying to keep a certain pace or avoid stopping, you’ll quickly get frustrated (unless you babywear and the kids don’t end up walking). Let them explore, pick up rocks, play with sand, and collect leaves. I like to wear my toddler in a baby carrier for most of the hike, then let her explore near the end. That way we get to cover some ground, but she still gets to do her own exploring.
Where is your favorite place to hike?
